FITNESS IS NOT ABOUT BEING BETTER THAN SOMEONE ELSE….. IT’S ABOUT BEING BETTER THAN YOU USED TO BE.
Who would have thought that a Kardashian would have something so memorable to offer beyond make up tips? But these words from Khloe K can help kick-start the right mentality.
The amazing thing about starting a fitness regime is that yes, you can (and will) get that little better, every time you workout.
We get it. Sometimes the hardest part can be simply crossing the threshold of a gym. You don’t know what to expect, you hate the idea of being in discomfort, and you are worried you’ll be intimidated by god-like creatures who are a hundred miles ahead of you.
So here is how to get started when you have never exercised before, or are simply starting something new:
1. Change your mindset:
Stop thinking “I cant…” or “I don’t like to….”. These thoughts will get you nowhere. Take a look at some videos of people who started from scratch and achieved amazing things, and remind yourself that they are everyday, normal people, just like you.
Here’s a video of one of our members, Sally:
The truth is, there is nothing but your own self stopping you from making incredible changes. Start with these new thoughts of “I wonder if I can….” and “I would like to try…”. Fill in the blanks, even if that first goal is simply turning up to your first session.
2. GEAR UP
You can’t help but feel excited about working out if you have the right gear. Grab yourself some new shoes, a fantastic new get up, a reusable water bottle and a gym-bag to keep it all in.
3. CROSS THAT THRESHOLD
Take a deep breath and jump on our website/ send us an email/ message us on facebook/ call us/ drop in and book a Free Trial class with us. We can guarantee you will feel nothing but welcome, and when you look around, you might be surprised at just how many people are working at the same level as you.
4. TAKE IT EASY
If you have never exercised before, you need to understand that its ok to go slow and steady. You’re not going to be able to keep up with people who might have been with us/ or been training for a few years now. And Hey, thats ok! Instead we encourage you to go at your own pace and let us teach you the right way to move to maximise results and minimise the risk of any injuries along the way. This may mean starting with a PVC pipe instead of a barbell, but again, that is ok!
Our experienced Coaches will know how far you should push yourself so you can see results but not hurt yourself. They’ll also show you how to cool down at the end of the session and chat to you about nutrition so you can minimise soreness the next day.
As the saying goes, “A journey of 100 miles beings with a single step”. You don’t have to achieve great things in your first workout. It is far better to set small goals to work towards.
5. LISTEN TO YOUR COACH
The body is a complex machine and must be treated with care. Your trainer will show you in detail how to move efficiently and safely so you gain the benefits without hurting yourself. Your Coaches role is also to push you to achieve that little bit more. When they set you a challenge it’s because they have determined you move well and move well consistently and think your ready. So take one of those deep breaths and see what you are really capable of.
6. KEEP AT IT
Nobody starts out looking great. Even Mr. Universe was a total gym-novice in the beginning of his career.
It is consistency that pays off. If you speak to anyone who has a great physique, they’ll tell you they started from scratch and JUST KEPT GOING.
You’ll have great workouts which leave you feeling on top of the world and not-so-great ones which will make you feel tired and sore but either way, you will be making progress and taking those steps to be “better than you used to be.”
SEE YOU SOON.
