Before I began CrossFit I was a national level 9 gymnast and had competed in the Victorian Championships since 2002, and was then selected to represent Victoria at the Australian Championships from years 2009-2011. In conjunction with my training I began coaching in 2003, and have coached a wide range of athletes at varied levels.
After retiring from gymnastics at the end of 2012 due to injuries, I wanted to ensure I maintained my strength, fitness and flexibility. Coincidentally, a friend had joined CrossFitBurwood so I thought I would give it a try. I quickly became a regular, attending 5:30am sessions religiously, and eventually increasing my training to a competitive level of two sessions a day.
Upon realising my gymnastics background had helped me considerably in CrossFit, my passion for coaching others the benefits of focusing on, and developing coordination, spacial awareness, balance and body control re-emerged. These elements are crucial in gymnastics and are one of the main reasons gymnasts tend to pick-up other sports relatively quickly. As such, by practicing the fundamentals of gymnastics, all other skills and movements improve.
